How Would You Act in a Crisis?
Here's a little scenario for you to consider...
You are the owner of a laptop computer that you use for your
business and various income generating ventures, for banking,
and for many other personal purposes. You are the parent of
teenage sons and allow them to use it for education and leisure.
Late on Saturday night you go to bed leaving one of those sons
using the laptop. You soon drift off to sleep and have a
restful night. You wake up on Sunday and the sun is shining,
so you get up without a care in the world.
There is one odd thing though - that same teenage son, who
normally doesn't appear until around midday, is already up
and about.
Then you find out why!
The first thing he says is, "The laptop isn't working properly"
"What's worng with it?", you ask.
"The keyboard and mouse don't work right. I spilled my drink
(of Orange Juice) on it last night!"
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What is your reaction?
Is it...
1. You let out a wild cry of "Arghhh!" and then rant and rave
at him calling him all the names under the sun and a
full-scale row develops.
2. You go into meltdown and sink into a feeling of great
anxiety and possibly depression as you ponder the
consequences.
Or...
3. After an understandable quiet curse and feeling of panic,
you regain your composure and set about finding the facts
and looking for a way to deal with it.
Well reactions 1 and 2 are perfectly understandable but they
don't deal with the problem, so it's #3 that's the right
response.
And I'm pleased to say that #3 is pretty much how I acted when
this actually happened to me last weekend. In fact I was quite
proud of myself because there is certainly a time when my
reaction would have been a combination of #1 and #2. And what
at first appeared to be a potentoial costly disaster turned
out to be easily solved.
Sure my initial reaction was one of horror and thoughts of
how it might stop me running my businesss and the fear that I
might lose the use of programs that were vital.
But I soon regained my composure.
I talked calmly to my son and found out what had actually
happened and what he had done about trying to deal with it.
I made it clear to him that he had been careless but that I
knew it was an accident. He agreed and offered to pay for it
to be put right (I let him think that he would have to,
although there was no way I was going to be that mean!).
I then spent time seeing just what could and could not be
done on the laptop. It soon became obvious that the problem
was restricted to the keyboard and that my work and programs
seemed to be safe. I back up my work regularly but did so
again just to be safe.
As it was Sunday I was unlikely to find anyone to help me
until the next day so I decided that I would check during the
day to see if there was any change (there was as some keys
started to work again), check the phone book and directories
for possible experts to contact on Monday, and then just get
on with my day as normal.
Come Monday morning after three phone calls I located a
company who could help and by Midday the same day I had my
laptop back in full working order and it had only cost a few
Pounds to get it fixed. What's more they told me what to do if
it ever happens again, so I learned from the experience too!!
Relief and joy!!
I hope nothing similar ever happens to you, but the reason for
telling you about it is to emphasise the need to act in a
controlled and logical way to deal with such events. Here's a
few hints:
- Allow yourself to react emotionally at first, as a release
is essential, but then regain control.
- If someone else is responsible, finding out what actually
happened is the important thing, not apportioning blame. Let
them know how you feel but don't get into conflict over it.
- Establish the facts for yourself and assess the current
situation.
- Don't rush into doing something but instead take time to
decide what you can do immediately to reduce any possible
consequences.
- Take your time and plan what needs to be done to put things
right.
- Don't let it unnecessarily disrupt everything else you want
or need to do.
- Put your plan into action and hopefully resolve your problem.
I know life isn't always that simple and sometimes you will
have to accept that you won't be able to resolve things fully.
I had accepted that the worst case scenario would mean having
to get a new laptop and so realised that an option would be to
claim against my insurance. That would have been a compromise
but if necessary you may have to accept a compromise solution
yourself.
The important thing is to have a logical method of dealing with
what life throws at you and to always seek to learn from your
experiences.

Seven Ways to You!
By Robin Rushlo
There are many ways to lose your sense of self-esteem and
your sense of yourself. We are faced with problems
everyday—many of which are beyond our ability to solve.
And, sometimes, our self-esteem takes a hit. We get
frustrated because we can't fix the problem. But whatever
happens, we should all try not to lose our own sense of
self and what is really important.
But how do we find our sense of self in the first place? So
what does it take to be a cut above the rest? What can we
do to get back on track? Can a week really make a
difference? Try staring with these seven exercises. You'll
be surprised at how your outlook will change!
1. Know your purpose. Are you wandering through life with
little direction - hoping that you'll find happiness,
health and prosperity? Identify your life purpose or
mission statement. This mission statement should be your
guiding compass. When you get off course, remember your
mission statement and it will lead you to your truth north
every time.
2. Know your values. What do you value most? Make a list of
the top five things you value the most. Some examples are
security, freedom, family, spiritual development, learning.
As you set your goals- check your goals against your
values. If the goal doesn't align with any of your top five
values - you may want to reconsider it or revise it.
3. Know your needs. Unmet needs can keep you from living
authentically. Your basic needs: shelter, food, clothing
must be met first—otherwise all your effort (conscious and
subconscious) will be devoted to trying to meet these basic
needs.
4. Know your passions. Do you know who you are and what you
truly enjoy in life? Obstacles like doubt and lack of
enthusiasm can hinder you. Decide what you truly want and
do not let anything derail your chance to become the person
you want to be. Express yourself and think about people
that inspire you.
5. Live from the inside out. Increase your awareness of
your inner wisdom by regularly reflecting in silence.
Breathe deeply to quiet your distracted mind. For most of
us it's hard to even find the peace and quiet we want even
in our own home. In my case I often just sit in a dimly lit
room and play some classical music. Sometimes, the only
quiet place is the bathroom! Try to find that quiet place
to think and reflect, even if it is only for a few minutes.
6. Capitalize on your strengths. What are your positive
traits? What special talents do you have? List three. If
you get stuck, ask those closest to you to help identify
these. Are you imaginative, witty, good with your hands?
Find ways to express your authentic self through your
strengths. You can increase your self-confidence and help
others when you share what you know.
7. Serve others. When you live authentically, you may find
that you develop an interconnected sense of being. When you
are true to who you are, living your purpose you will find
that giving of your talents to the world around you comes
naturally. You give back by serving others. The rewards for
sharing your gifts with others are immeasurable.
Self-improvement is indeed one type of work that is worth
it. The difference between leading a routine life and the
life we have dreamed of lies within ourselves and our
ability to continually change for the better. You have to
start somewhere and these seven ideas should help you get
the ball rolling.

And The Winner of "The Apprentice" 2008 is...
You may be aware of the TV program "the Apprentice" where each
year a group of young businessmen and women compete against
each other to win the prize, which in the uK version is a
£100,000 a year job working for the multi-millionaire
entrepreneur Sir Alan Sugar.
Well last night was the final and the wineer was a young man
called Lee McQueen. Now personally I wasn't over-impressed
with any of the candidates but Lee was certainly deserving of
his win, if only for his sheer determination, enthusiasm, and
hard work.
But there was one other important thing that he said in his
interview after his success. Not only was winning the
apprentice a major goal for him but he had a clear strategy too,
and that involved breaking down this major goal into three
smaller ones:
1. To survive the first week.
2. To reach the final five contestants.
3. To win the final.
It certainly worked for him! And having clear goals and a plan
to achieve them can work for you too. So if you haven't set
yours go and do it now.
You should have meaningful goals for all areas of your life and
just to get you thinking along the right lines here are some
suggestions to the sort of things you should be including:
- Career - Do you know what work you really want to do? Think
about it carefully and once you have decided set down a plan
to ensure you do what you want.
- Money - Do you want to be a millionaire or do you have more
modest ambitions? But be honest because a lot of people who
say they don't want millions in reality want just that, it's
simply that they have been conditioned to believe it will
never happen. If you want to improve your wealth you must
have a step by step plan of how you are going to do it.
- Health - Is there something you want to improve about your
health? It could include things like weight loss, fitness,
body building, blood pressure, healthy eating, or even
cosmetic surgery. Only you can know or do anything about it.
- Leisure - Is there a new hobby or pursuit you want to take
up or a sporting achievement you want to work towards? Often
a percieved lack of time will hold you back so how can you
manage your time better to find those important extra minutes.
- Education - Do you want or need further educational
qualifications? There are many ways to enhance your education
so decide what you want, find the best way to get it, and set
in place a realistic plan for attainment.
Only you can decide what is important to you and what you want
to achieve but a focussed and planned approach will work. To
get further help why not get hold of the "Achieve-IT! Goal
Software".
