How To Use Lists To Take Control

You may remember that two weeks ago in Self Improvement Front
Line you learned about the importance of sorting your "To Do"
list into three categories - "Must Do", "Should Do", and
"Want To Do".

Hopefully by following the methods discussed you will have
sorted them out and maybe even have discarded a few things
that you don't really need to do after all.

But how can they help you to take control of your time?

Well look at the way you sorted your "Must Do" list.

You now know what needs to be done immediately, and what that
really means. You know what are the routine tasks and how
often they need to be done. And you know which are the
one-off tasks and when they must be done.

So you are now ready to start compiling those all-important
checklists.

Start by listing everything that needs to be done on a daily
basis. That will form your daily checklist.

Then do the same for monthly, quarterly, even annual tasks so
that you have simple checklists of must do items for each.

Then go to the urgent things that must be done immediately.
I doubt whether there is very much on there that can't wait
until tomorrow. otherwise I'm sure you would have done it
before you started this exercise. But if there is something
you absolutely must do today make a list for today. Put all
the rest of the "immediate" items on a list to do tomorrow,
or, if you really won't have the time, the next day.

Then go to the item on your "want to do" list that you
decided was the one you wanted most. The time to start doing
it is now!

So add it to your list of things to do Tomorrow. Then decide
how long you are going to spend doing it and add to each
"Tomorrow" list for as long as you need. Or if it is
something that you are going to do on a regular basis just
add to whichever list is suitable. But make sure you write it
down!

Finally for now, take the things from your "should do" list
that you decided must be done and add them to the Tomorrow
list or schedule a date for when they must be done. If you do
this put a note in your diary on the day before so that they
can go on the list of things to do Tomorrow at that time.

You will now have your list of things to do Tomorrow as well
as checklists for daily, weekly, monthly and whatever other
time-scale you need for routine tasks.

Just start using them!

The best thing I ever did in getting control of my time was
to start using these lists. At the end of each working day the
last thing I do is complete my list of things to do "Tomorrow"
and draw a line under it.

Why I draw a line under it and other tips about working this
way will be revealed next week.

Two weeks ago in Self Improvement Front Line I included some
advice about creating good habits and the sort of things you
can do each day.

I hope you found it useful and are developing your own good
habits for success. To help you along here's an article on the
subject that you will find interesting:

4 Keys To Creating Successful Habits
By Jason Osborn

What makes successful people successful?

We would all love to be able to walk down to the local
supermarket and pick up a bottle of success. But let’s look
past that fantasy and find out one of the most basic reasons
why people become successful.

Right now, think of someone that you know personally who is
successful. Can you see their face in your mind?

Good.

Now ask yourself this question, “Does this person have a
successful routine or set of habits that makes them
successful?” I would be shocked if they didn’t.

Sometimes the only difference between being successful and
being average is having successful habits. Some examples of
successful habits could be getting up earlier, doing thing
when they need to be done, being prepared, or effective time
management.

So how do you start to build these success habits in your
life?

Here are 4 tips on creating successful habits.

1. Identify – Find the areas in your life that need changing.
Write down these new habits that need to be formed. Don’t
become overwhelmed at trying to figure out how you are going
to form all of these habits.

2. Pick 2 – Most people sabotage themselves by trying to
change everything at once. Instead, pick one major and one
minor habit that you want to form. For the next 30-90 days
these will be the success habits that you will create.

3. Start small – Now that you have your two success habits,
create a daily or weekly routine that is easy to follow. For
instance, let’s say that you want to wake up an hour earlier
so that you can get more successful things done. Instead of
setting your alarm an hour earlier right at the beginning,
only set it 2-5 minutes earlier every morning until you reach
your goal. This way it would take you 30 days or 12 days
respectively to create your success habit.

Remember, the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a
time.

4. Repeat – Once you have created your new habits move on to
the next 2 success habits that you want to create. Before
you know it you will have created a whole new life full of
success filled habits.

Just imagine where you will be in one year if you follow
these four keys to creating successful habits. If it takes
you only 60 days to create 2 habits, you will have created
12 success habits in just one year!

5 Definitions of Success

To truly enjoy success you need to fully uderstand what it
actually means to you. What are you seeking to achieve and
when will you know that you are successful. It's something you
must be clear about.

Indeed the question of what success really is has occupied
minds throughout history. So to get you thinking here are five
quotations from famous people on the subject:

"One secret of success in life is for a man to be ready for
his opportunity when it comes." - Benjamin Disraeli

"Success is to be measured not so much by the position that
one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has
overcome." - Booker T Washington

"All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence; then
success is sure." - Mark Twain

"Success is dependent on effort" - Sophocles

"Success is that old ABC - ability, breaks, and courage."
- Charles Luckman

So think about how you can define what success means to you
and then go out and work to achieve it.
